Исследовал возникновение и развитие земледелия - "неолитическую революцию", переход от присваивающего хозяйства древнего каменного века к производящему хозяйству эпохи неолита. Основным фактором общественного прогресса считал эволюцию экономики, проблему происхождения государственности сводил к вопросу о возникновении городов ("городская революция"), не уделяя должного внимания социальным отношениям. Погиб в горах близ Сиднея.

Чарлз Мэннинг (2.2.1869, Ипсиланти, штат Мичиган, - 19.12.1954, Пало-Альто, штат Калифорния), американский биолог. В 1890 окончил Вислианский университет в Канзасе. В 1895-1934 работал (с 1916 - профессор) в Чикагском университете; с 1937 - профессор Станфордского университета (Калифорния). Основные труды по цитологии и эмбриологии. Автор теории физиологических градиентов, которой пытался объяснить процессы эмбрионального развития позвоночных и явления дифференцировки и интеграции в развитии многоклеточных животных; согласно этой теории, различные отделы вытянутого в длину тела (например, плоских червей) характеризуются разной интенсивностью обмена веществ и различной чувствительностью к повреждающим агентам (недостатку кислорода, ядам), причём эти физиологические свойства убывают или возрастают постепенно от одного конца тела к другому или от какого-либо конца тела к его середине. Теория Чайлда отражает объективные явления, однако не объясняет индивидуальное развитие организма в целом.
